SUMMER 2010 SCHEDULE & UNIT DESCRIPTIONS

Week 1: June 28 – July 2
Ecology Engineers – Our engineers will build an eco-friendly green city. They will explore environmentally friendly products. Engineers will learn about pollution and how their actions can have an impact on the earth. They will also create products to include in their eco-friendly green city.

Week 2: July 5 – July 9
Kitchen Chemistry 2 – All young scientists enjoy mixing up concoctions of foods to see what they can produce. They will be introduced again to even more recipes and mixtures. We will learn many concepts in chemistry by experimenting with food. Students will come away from this class with a new appreciation of what is involved in making their favorite meals.

Week 3: July 12 – July 16
Imagineering - Come join us and become an inventor like Rube Goldberg. We will learn how to turn junk into levers, pulleys, axles, and etc. to create a new invention that can be used in everyday life. Junk is another man’s treasure. Our treasure will be our creative minds creating new inventions.

Week 4: July 19– July 23
Human Body - Come see how the inside of your body works. What role does nutrition play in how our bodies function? Let’s take a look inside. We will examine x-rays of our bodies and look in detail at our heart, lungs, and brain.

Week 5: July 26 – July 30
Rocketry & Flight – If it flies, glides, hovers, hangs, shoots, or blasts off, we’ll be building it! We will create and alter wing design planes that dive, dip, loop, and spin across the sky. We will learn about propulsion and air power as we create and build marshmallow launchers. And for all you aero-maniacs out there, we will be launching rockets NASA style!

Week 6: Aug. 2 – Aug. 6
Prehistoric Walk – Get ready to go on a Prehistoric Walk! Have you ever wondered what sorts of creatures roamed the Earth millions of years ago? What did they look like? What did they do? What did they eat? Discover what mysteries are hidden tight under your feet.

Week 7: Aug. 9 – Aug. 13
Veterinary Science – If you ever wanted to know more about your family pet , here’s your chance to go inside the heads, hearts, bones, and stomachs of the critters you love so much. Caring for animals is a rewarding job. Now here’s your chance to get your paws wet doing it!

Week 8: Aug. 16 – Aug. 20
Fizz, Bang, Pop - Have you ever wanted to mix different liquids and powders in your kitchen just to see what happens? Have you ever wanted to learn how volcanoes erupt? We can harness chemical power to make safe mini-explosions. We will have fun with the chemistry we see every day!
