Take Creativity to Another Level This Summer!
Operation Junk is where your summer fun and creativity begin. K-5th grade students are invited to join us for a weekly FULL day program of creativity, innovation and lots of FUN!
MISSION: Students will use brain power and creativity to transfer junk into Super Machines. They will enhance the following skills: teamwork, decision-making, organization, classification, prediction, problem solving, science, and mathematics while having fun in the spirit of competition.
PARTICIPENTS: K-5th grade students who are ready for a fun and exciting challenge. (Students will be divided into age appropriate groups to complete tasks.)
PLACE: Kahler Hall 5440 Old Tucker Row Columbia Harpers Choice Village Center
TIME: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Aftercare provided for an additional cost until 5:00 PM)
COST: $220 per week (Aftercare $50 per week) Snacks are provided and Friday is Pizza Day
SUMMER 2008 SCHEDULE & UNIT DESCRIPTIONS
Week 1: June 29 – July 3
Ecology Engineers – Our engineers will build an eco-friendly green city. They will explore environmentally friendly products. They will learn about pollution and how their actions can have an impact on the earth. They will create products to include in their eco-friendly green city.
Week 2: July 6 – July 1
Kitchen Chemistry 2 – All young scientists enjoy mixing up concoctions of foods to see what they can produce. They will be introduced again to even more recipes and mixtures. We will learn many concepts in chemistry by experimenting with food. Students will come away from this class with a new appreciation of what is involved in making their favorite meals.
Week 3: July 13 – July 17
CSI: Murder Mystery – Learn how to use and apply scientific techniques to examine the surroundings and solve a mystery. Become a detective and solve a mystery using fingerprints, secret codes, clues, chromatography, and other investigative techniques. Put your skills to the test and solve the crime.
Week 4: July 20 – July 24
Imagineering - Come join us and become an inventor like Rube Goldberg. We will learn how to turn junk into levers, pulleys, axles, etc to create a new invention that can be used in everyday life. Junk is another man’s treasure. Our treasure will be our creative minds creating new inventions.
Week 5: July 27 – July 31
Human Body . Come see how the inside of your body works. What role does nutrition play in how our bodies function? Let’s take a look inside. We will examine x-rays of our bodies and look in detail at our heart, lungs, and brain.
Week 6: Aug. 3 – Aug. 7
Rocketry & Flight – If it flies, glides, hovers, hangs, shoots, or blasts off, we’ll be building it. We will create and alter wing design planes that dive, dip, loop, and spin across the sky. We will learn about propulsion and air power as we create and build marshmallow launchers. And for all you aero-maniacs out there we will be launching rockets NASA style.
Week 7: Aug. 10 – Aug. 14
Prehistoric Walk – Get ready to go on a Prehistoric Walk! Have you ever wondered what sorts of creatures roamed the Earth millions of years ago? What did they look like? What did they do? What did they eat. Discover what mysteries are hidden tight under your feet.
Week 8: Aug. 17 – Aug. 21
Veterinary Science – If you ever wanted to know more about your family pet , here’s your chance to go inside the heads, hearts, bones, and stomachs of the critters you love so much. Caring for animals is a rewarding job, now here’s your chance to get your paws wet doing it.
Week 9: Aug. 24 – Aug. 28
Fizz, Bang, Pop - Have you ever wanted to mix different liquids and powders in your kitchen just to see what happens? Have you ever wanted to learn how volcanoes erupt? We can harness chemical power to make safe mini-explosions. We will have fun with the chemistry we see every day!
